Poetry Writing Classes – Saturday Classes

Online

South Bank Poetry Editor Katherine Lockton runs regular Saturday poetry writing classes online.

Join us for our online programme of poetry writing classes provide a fun, personal and accessible approach to learning how to write poetry, in a friendly environment that puts the student’s learning experience first.

HOW OUR ONLINE CLASSES WORK

Everyone sits around a virtual large table for a friendly discussion of poetry.

In each class you will be taught how to read poetry critically so as to learn how to emulate the techniques employed by the writer. This learning process will be broken up into bite chunk pieces so that you can learn at your own pace.

Content will vary class to class, but on all our online poetry classes you can expect the following:

– reading, writing and thinking about poetry critically

– exposure to new writers, voices, and ways of creating

– the confidence and skills to take your writing to the next level

– generating new work

– discovery of new ways of approaching familiar subjects

– better understanding of how to make creative choices (length, theme, tone, etc)

– enhanced critical skills

– practical advice on further development

We always put you first. With South Bank Poetry you will only ever be taught by our editor Katherine. We aim to provide you with the optimum learning environment.

Our online poetry masterclasses take place via zoom. Zoom is a cloud- based video conferencing service that is free to join. It allows you to virtually meet with others either by audio, video or both.

It is not necessary to hold a zoom account to take part in the online masterclasses.

Our online poetry masterclasses are structured according to regular weekly sessions (on average this amounts to 2 assignments each week). You will be given homework after each session which you will be given feedback on by SBP editor Katherine Lockton. Each week we offer different writing exercises designed to teach you new writing skills. You will finish each session with a new draft of a poem to work on after the session. You will learn how to take your draft further through a combination of personal one to one feedback and editing techniques taught to you.

Each online class has its own dedicated private facebook group online. Once you book a course you will sent an invitation to join the group and meet and network with fellow poets. You will use your Facebook group to post messages, interact with other poets and their writing, and participate in live chats, as well as submit poems and talk to the class tutor Katherine.

We have worked hard to make your learning experience as fuss-free and as close to face-to-face teaching as possible, with the additional benefits of convenience and access that online allows. If you are new to online learning, and unsure about whether it is suitable, please go to our IS ONLINE RIGHT FOR ME? section below.

What will I learn?

Each online class consists of a mixture of reading, discussion and writing exercises to stimulate creativity, technical craft, and writing confidence alongside encouragement and constructive feedback from your tutor on your poetry.

Class format

South Bank Poetry’s online classes cover a wide variety of subject matters. Sessions typically last 120 minutes and are designed to fit around your busy schedules.

Subject matter and level of ability for each course vary hugely from term to term.

Is Online right for me?

Online courses are open to all students but a basic level of digital literacy is essential. You need to be a confident user of digital platforms to take part in these classes.

No specialist software is required – you just need a computer, tablet or mobile device and a wifi connection.

WHERE WE ARE BASED

All our face-to-face classes are held regularly in our London classroom in Westminster Cathedral – where we have tea and coffee freely available. All classes are held in the Hinsley Room, Westminster Cathedral, Morpeth Terrace, SW1.

The venue is a 4-minute walk from Victoria Station. Take the ‘Victoria Street’ exit from the station and cross the road, then walk straight ahead until you are facing the cathedral. On your right is Morpeth Terrace. The room is between 2 playgrounds.

Includes FREE entry into Westminster Cathedral.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY
